Biography of Legendary Pakistani Singer Ahmed Rushi

Ahmed Rushdi was born on 24 April 1934 in Hyderabad Dakkan. He was a great versatile Pakistani Hit Singer and he was an important contributor to the Golden Age of Pakistani Filmi Songs. He was best known for his distinctive, melodious, powerful voice, and complex and dark emotional expressions.

Which led many critics to state his voice as the greatest and most distinctive they had ever heard. He was very popular and the first Pop Music Singer in Asia, his Pop Song, “Ko Ko Korina” in the “Film Armaan” was a super hit song.  This great singer died on 11 April 1983.

He was renowned for his performances on stage as well. He was in terrible health in the latter part of his life and passed away at the age of 48 from a heart attack after having composed over 5,000 cinema songs for 583 pictures that were eventually produced.

Along with popular music, Rushdi contributed to the rise in popularity of Naseer Turabi’s ghazals. He received five Nigar Awards, including the Lux Style Award, the Lifetime Achievement Award, and the Best Singer of the Millennium titles. 

He received the Sitara-e-Imtiaz, or “star of excellence,” from Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf in 2003, 20 years after his passing, in recognition of his accomplishments in the arts. In Asian Woman Magazine’s 2016 survey, Rushdi was named the most popular singer of all time. His song Ko Ko Korina, which received high ratings, was used in the opening sequence of the American television series Ms. Marvel in 2022.

Early life and musical knowledge of Ahmed Rushdi

He did not inherit music from anyone, and no one in his family has ever had a musical connection. Ahmed Rushdi’s father’s close friend, whom he called uncle and who adored him greatly, was amazed by his singing abilities.

He registered at a nearby music school in Hyderabad Deccan. Additionally, M.A. Rauf and Iqbal Qureshi, two well-known composers of the day, also taught music at the same institution. So, from the aforementioned professors, Ahmed Rushdi acquired the fundamentals of music. Later, he received instruction from Ustad Nathu Khan in classical music.

New personalities emerged in the 1970s, including Alamgir, Akhlaq Ahmed, Ghulam Abbas, A Nayyar, etc. Rushdi, however, continued to be a popular film industry vocalist. In 1971, the movies Bandagi, Naag Muni, and Baazi were released. Each of the three movies featured a replay of Ahmed Rushdi.

For songs like “Aik Albeli Si Saar” (Naag Muni), “Tum Bhi Ho Ajnabi” (Baazi), and “Poocho NA Hum Ne Kis Liye,” he also received numerous honors (Intezar). The song “Chore Chalay Hum Chore Chalay lo Sheher Tumhara Chore Chalay,” from the 1970 film Phir Chand Nikley Ga, may have never been more poignant as it was after Ahmed Rushdi’s passing.

For the Pakistani film industry, 1980 turned out to be a nightmare. The number of Urdu films rapidly reduced as the Punjabi film age began. Due to the songs’ overwhelming dominance in those movies, which featured predominantly female vocals, there was very little opportunity for male playback singers.

Measures were put in place to restrict the circulation of music after Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq was installed as president by the military, and Pakistan Television Corporation became the only outlet for entertainment (PTV).  while the nation forbade the viewing of music videos. Rushdi performed in movies like Farzana, Hanstey Aansoo, Haseena Maan Jaye Gi, and others, but his illustrious singing career was on the verge of ending.
